Welcome Back to IS 229 Student Government Election Season!
Just like last year, we will select:
-
President: 8th grade
-
Vice President: 7th grade
-
Secretary: 6th grade
-
Each class will also elect a “Class Representative” to join us at some meetings and relay information back to official classes.
BENEFITS- WHY SHOULD I GET INVOLVED?
The student government will meet one period each week in my office to discuss happenings around the school, plan our talent show, record an exclusive podcast, and listen to the concerns of our fellow students so we can make suggestions to our school’s leaders. We will also be going on a school trip just for student government members… and YES, there will be snacks each week. Being involved in student government looks great on high school (and college) applications. It will be a first step to a long career making a difference in your community.
REQUIREMENTS- WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO RUN FOR GOVERNMENT?
-
You must be in good academic standing.
-
You will need a permission slip signed by one of your teachers. (Permission slip is below for you to copy).
-
Hand signed permission slip in to Mr. Clancy by FRIDAY November 8th.
BIG CHANGES- WHAT IS DIFFERENT THIS YEAR?
1: ELECTION TICKETS: You will be a part of an election “Ticket”, just like the United States does. This means candidates for President, Vice President, and Secretary will work as a 3 person TEAM to get elected.
2: ELECTORAL COLLEGE: Again, just like the United States, we will now have an electoral college. What that means is that each class has a small number of “Electoral Votes”, based on the size of the class. On election day, each student will individually vote for their preferred Ticket. Whichever “Ticket” (team) wins the most votes from a class gets ALL of that class’s Electoral Votes. So, that means you will need to win over the majority of students in a class to win the class’s vote.
